Stefan Pfirter is a Swiss artist who was born in Basel, Switzerland in 1978 and still lives there. He did an apprenticeship as a polygraph, which included designing with text, images, colors, and shapes – all the things supporting creative freedom.
As a child he drew often, using many colors. His continuing love of color, his unending patience and a healthy ambition characterize his art today, making the resulting paintings unique.
He says: “Sometimes I have so many ideas that I don’t know which one to develop. So, I just wait until I feel the moment to begin a new work or to continue working on an unfinished one. I always work on several pictures at the same time, the result being that it can take a few weeks or even months for me to finish one painting.”
He continues: “I use all kinds of colors and contrasts and also work with a wide variety of materials (acrylic, watercolor, pastel) and painting tools. I usually paint on paper, but sometimes on canvas. The types of colors may be the same, but I mix my techniques: I combine different colors or experiment with color types and materials (mixed art, mixed media). I prefer acrylic paints because they give me the most versatility. Having this range of painting possibilities fascinates me and gives me great pleasure. It keeps me alive, vital, and inspired. When I paint, I often fall into a trance-like, meditative state. I forget the time and whatever surrounds me; I am in absolute harmony with my creation.” This quality is a gift.
When someone sees one of my paintings, they are drawn into its inner life. A dialogue and a deep connection results. The vibrancy of my work stirs up emotions, not just once, but each time the picture is looked at. It seems to change with each viewing.
